What is copper used for?

Copper is used across a range of projects and is often chosen for its beautiful appearance. It has a higher price-per-unit cost than steel, and as such, it’s typically used for decorative purposes – to create stunning statement pieces or add eye-catching touches. We regularly work with copper to produce beautifully handcrafted bar and counter tops for homes and businesses as well as smaller pieces, like bold brackets or handles for furnishings, or stand-out door push plates. Take a look at some examples below.

Why choose copper?

Copper is a versatile metal with desirable physical properties and a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Antimicrobial agents -Copper rapidly destroys harmful bacteria to help minimise the growth and spread diseases and viruses, including SARS, Norovirus and Covid, hence why it’s often chosen for communal, high-traffic areas.
  • An investment for the future – Copper is increasing in value, driven in part by the soaring demand from the renewables industry. The high demand, coupled with its ability to be recycled without losing its quality, makes the metal a great future  investment for any business.
  • Workability – It’s flexible, ductile, and malleable, making it easy to work with. With the right skills and equipment, copper can be cast with very high precision, using methods like TIG welding and CNC machining to achieve very specific forms.
  • Aesthetic – Its beautiful red-brown hue brings a warm, welcoming feel to any environment. It’s simultaneously a timeless classic, bringing luxury and class to any space, as well as the perfect statement piece for a contemporary setting.
  • Versatility – Copper can be elevated with a range of different finishes to achieve your desired look.
  • Strong and durable – Copper stands the test of time, with its ability to withstand high temperatures and pressure, malleability, and corrosion-resistance all working in its favour.
  • High tolerances – Its corrosion resistance, electrical and thermal conductivity make it the perfect material for telecoms, plumbing and electrical applications.

Bespoke copper fabrication FAQs

What surface finishing options are there for copper?

Copper is a versatile metal that can be manipulated to achieve desired aesthetics. Surface finishing methods include:

  • Polish – A clean, shiny finish achieved through the regular application of specialist polishes, waxes or lacquers to protect the surface and prevent natural ageing.
  • Patina – A natural surface change that happens over time when the copper is exposed to air and water. As the copper oxidises it turns darker and develops beautiful blue-green tones.
  • Natural satin – An antique or rustic red-brown hue with a matte finish, achieved by sanding or scrubbing the surface to cause the oxidation and colour change.

Can you combine copper with other materials for my project?

Certainly! We work with a range of different sheet metals, including steel, aluminium, brass, zinc, pewter, titanium and bronze. With over three decades’ experience producing custom and bespoke designs, there’s no better partner than CSM for multi-metal projects.

What care and maintenance is involved with copper products?

It depends on the type of look and finish you want from your bespoke copper design. We usually recommend regular cleaning using a mild soap and soft cloth, as harsh chemicals and abrasive materials can scratch and damage the surface.

Your copper can be left to age or patina naturally over time, or you can treat it to maintain a shiny appearance. You will need to regularly treat the surface with a copper cleaner or polish, and you may also benefit from adding a wax or lacquer to it to provide an extra layer of protection and prevent wear and tear.

When you work with CSM, we will produce and deliver your product with your desired aesthetic and provide care and maintenance guidance so your copper stays looking just the way you want it.
